Acne Laser Therapy Facts and Advantages
Acne laser therapy is a new laser light therapy option that may benefit patients who have stopped responding to drug treatment or who want to try something that does not impact internal body systems. Acne laster therapy targets only the skin of the patients, not the glands connected to the skin. While acne laser therapy does is not effective for every acne patient, (acne has many different causes and not all of them respond to the same treatments), for acne patients who do respond the treatment laser light therapy can have long term positive effects. Two kinds of acne laser therapy are currently available: Candela Smoothbeam laser therapy, and Lumenis One IPL + ALA (Medication Activated by Light) therapy. Candela Smoothbeam laser therapy has been available for about three years, and is not usually covered by medical insurance. Treatments cost between $300 and $500 per session, and an average of four sessions is usually necessary to produce results. Patients undergoing Candela Smoothbeam acne laser therapy can expect to experience redness at the treated site for one to four hours afterward, and topical creams are often prescribed to minimize residual discomfort. Good scientific data shows that a 70% average improvement can be expected after four sessions. The method is well-tolerated and produces minimal discomfort. Lumenis One IPL + ALA acne treatment involves giving the patient a special medication in advance of the session that is then activated by the laser light therapy. A numbing cream must also be applied to the skin about 90 minutes before the treatment begins. The down time after each IPL +ALA session is longer than for the Candela Smoothbeam therapy: patients can expect redness and tenderness for up to one day after each IPL +ALA session. Even so, most patients report minimal discomfort. Some bruising can occur with IPL + ALA laser light therapy, but this is usually minor. Scientific research backing the effectiveness of the IPL + ALA type of acne laser therapy is less available because it is still a fairly new procedure, but preliminary results suggest that most patients can expect 70% improvement after 3 to 5 sessions. Like Candela Smoothbeam therapy, Lumenis One IPL + ALA therapy is not usually covered by medical insurance and is relatively expensive; about $300 to $500 per session. IPL + ALA acne laster treatments are not recommended for dark skin. The IPL + ALA option is also not very effective in reducing fine lines or wrinkles. Acne laser therapy is not the answer for everyone, but acne and laser light therapy are both fairly safe and widely available. Both are rapidly gaining in popularity. If you decide to give laser light therapy or acne laser therapy a try, make sure to talk with your dermatologist first to make it is worth your time and money and that it is appropriate for your specific condition. Do get a referral to a reputable facility. If you are in treatment for any specific skin condition, including acne, always consult a licensed physician before embarking on any new procedure.
