What is a Testosterone Treatment?

Testosterone treatment is a medical method for increasing testosterone levels in the human body by means of injections, tablets, or trans-dermal patches. Testosterone is the male hormone responsible for healthy sex drive, muscle mass, energy, aggression, hair growth, and a variety of other secondary male sex characteristics.

Women also need some testosterone to maintain a healthy sexual drive and optimal energy levels. Both men and women may seek testosterone therapy for a variety of reasons, some medically valid and others more controversial.

Medically accepted reasons for considering testosterone therapy include erectile dysfunction, chemotherapy, certain inflammatory diseases, and low energy caused by depressed levels of testosterone in the bloodstream.

More controversial reasons to try testosterone treatment include post-menopausal sexual problems in women (especially reduced desire), and the use of testosterone therapy as an anti aging regimen (especially when injected).

Testosterone treatment, whether in the form of trans-dermal patch, cream, tablets, or intramuscular injection, is not without risk. All hormones can increase the risk of various kinds of cancer when taken artificially. Other common side effects of testosterone treatment include reduced testicle size, fluid retention, acne and/or oily skin, breast enlargement, increased red blood cell count, and changes in cholesterol and blood lipid levels.

Testosterone therapy should never be undertaken without consulting a licensed physician, and testosterone injections should never be used as an anti aging regimen.

Testosterone is a powerful hormone that can cause serious problems when used incorrectly. Men with certain active cancers and men with prostate problems should not take testosterone treatments.

Women considering testosterone treatment for low sexual desire post-menopause should check with their physicians beforehand. Testosterone treatment should be always be actively monitored by a competent medical professional.

Testosterone treatment can be an effective way to restore energy and sexual vitality late in life, or to counteract the side effects of certain illnesses and their treatment. In some cases, when not administered correctly or taken for the wrong reasons, testosterone therapy can be dangerous.

The key to successful testosterone treatment is professional diagnosis, advice, and supervision.
